Can a used Verizon Blackberry Curve work on an already existing plan without the internet?

My old voyager got water damage a few days ago. A friend of mine has a Blackberry Curve she no longer uses, and I was wondering if I could use the curve to make calls and texts (as I did with my Voyager) without having to purchase a monthly internet plan? I have been searching around different forums and some people say you can, but that there will be extra charges on my bill because I don't have the internet. I also called Verizon Support and said that it's not possible, but other people in the forums said that Verizon support would say that but really you can. Someone please help!! I want to use the blackberry but can I??? Thanks
*I already am on a Verizon plan, but not specifically for a Blackberry device

I can't speak for the Curve, but when I added my Palm Treo 700vx onto my boss' account a few days ago, they said since I had a smartphone (blackberry should go into the same category) that I was required to have a unlimited data plan for $30/mo ... ended up being a good thing since I've used almost 100 MB already (getting a very nice set of apps now)
