Do 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900 Mhz GSM phones work with American SIM cards?
I plan to purchase this phone from a Chinese website:

(Yes, I am aware this resembles the Apple iPhone a lot. However -- this phone supports the 1900 Mhz GSM, so does that mean it will work with my AT&T SIM card?

if the phone is a quad band (4 frequencies) - then it is a world phone, and can be used in any country - it will work with your AT&T sim card;however, one note of caution - you can get some great prices on non-AT&T branded phones from lots of different places, but many times you will have problems with using some of the data capabilities on the phone on the network, so just be aware of this before you invest a lot.
The tech support team will work with you as much as possible to assist, but there still may be things that will not work correctly. For example, you may be able to talk with no problem, but you may not be able to access the internet, or, you may be able to text, but you may not be able to send or receive pics.
Due to all of the programming and software involved in cell phone use, it is not unusual for manufacturers to send updated software versions out for phones (Think about your computer, and how Microsoft is always updating versions of things.) The same thing happens with cell phones, and if the manufacturer branded the phone for AT&T, anytime they make updates or changes, they communicate that info to AT&T tech support teams so that the software can be downloaded automatically, or supported as appropriate.
If you have a phone that comes from another company, they do not get this info, and have no way of identifying or correcting possible incompatibilities, etc.
