Is it strange to walk through a store while talking on your cell phone with the speaker phone on?

I saw this man the other day while walking through walmart. I thought that he was talking to himself because I didn't see a cellphone or bluetooth. I walked closer to see if he was talking to me or if he was just plain crazy and found that another lady thought the same thing and started a conversation with him. He seemed to have a strange look on his face and waved at her. This went on with a few other people in the store. The dude was on speaker phone talking to someone...the phone was in his basket. With todays technology wouldn't it be easier to get bluetooth or something. So my question is, is this man strange or is this normal.
