should i get a faceplate for my iphone?

Does it help from damages like scratches and just in case i drop it will it help prevent it from breaking and does anyone have that zagg one does it really work?
i had a couple of friends accidentally drop there iphone and it crack i don't want my iphone to crack so i want to buy a protected case for it i'm just not sure which would would be more effected.
Insurance on your iPhone would be a better idea.
